The Federation-Klingon War of 2372 to 2373 was a short conflict between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire.

The conflict was birthed out of the Klingon-Cardassian War due to the Federation not supporting the Klingon invasion of the Cardassian Union in 2372. In response the Klingon Chancellor Gowron pulled the Empire out of the Khitomer Accords.[1]

Over that year the Klingons and Federation forces clashed near their respective borders, however none of these events proved to be sufficient to spark a war.[2]

The crucial event proved to be Gowron's demand for the Federation to abandon the Archanis sector, which the Klingon had long relinquished control of to the Federation. When the Federation did not the two powers went to war.[3]

Initially the Federation was unprepared for a sustained conflict against the Klingons. The Federation Council hoping for a diplomatic solution held off from fully committing to the conflict granting the Klingons the early momentum. After three months of fighting the Federation slowed the Klingon advance, even pushing them back in some regions. The surprise revelation that Klingon General Martok had been replaced by a Changeling resulted in a ceasefire to the conflict.[4]

The ceasefire was broken several weeks later by the Klingons. Multiple Klingon battle groups and Starfleet fleets were engaged in several battles along the border and in Archanis. Several Federation worlds were attacked and included: Ajilon Prime, Belis IV and Korvat III. The fighting was brief and the ceasefire was reinstated.[5][6]

The war officially came to an end in late-2373 when Gowron reinstated the Khitomer Accords following the Cardassian Union joining the Dominion.[7]
