Deflector shields or simply shields, were a type of force field that surrounds a starship, space station, or planet to protect it from harm.

Operations[]

Deflector shields are created through the use of shield generators. These generators create a layer or layers of energy around an object that prevents matter and energy from passing through. On starships shields were usually arrayed into six quadrants, fore, aft, port, starboard, dorsal and ventral. The shape of shields came in two general forms, an elliptical shape around the object or a contour following shape just above the hull of the vessel. Shields could be weakened if they were impacted with enough energy.

Shields operated at a specific shield frequency. Knowing the frequency would allow objects to pass through the shields.[1] Most transporter technology was unable to beam through raised shields unless a gap could be found.
